Best first choice
Individual Stableford. It lets all six players compete in one field without inventing uneven teams, and Appendix C provides a clear 95% recommended allowance for individual Stableford. It also limits the damage from one disastrous hole because the Rules score a hole in points and allow a player to stop once the result will be zero points.
What to agree before play
Treating a six-player social field as one match: match play is opponent-versus-opponent, so use pairings or a stated three-ball or rotation structure. Assuming 95% is mandatory: the Committee sets Terms of Competition and may adjust an allowance for field size, so record the chosen percentage before play. Calling a house scramble an official Rules format: agree selection, placement, scoring and team conditions, and do not silently borrow a four-player allowance for two-player teams.
Table
| Game or arrangement | Why it fits |
|---|---|
| Individual Stableford | Six players share one points-based field, each using an individual handicap. |
| Individual net stroke play | A six-player leaderboard compares adjusted total scores with everyone playing their own ball. |
| Individual match play | Run three head-to-head matches, or use a stated rotation across rounds; handicaps are applied between each pair. |
| Four-ball match play | Make three pairs and schedule pair-versus-pair matches, rotating opponents if desired; partners play separate balls and the lower side score counts. |
| Four-ball stroke play | Three pairs can play in one field, with the best net score from each pair counting on each hole. |
| Foursomes stroke play | Three pairs share one ball and alternate strokes, creating a team handicap calculation. |
| Two-player scramble | Three pairs can compete, but publish local selection rules and the WHS two-player allowance because scramble details are Committee or house-rule territory. |
Worked example
For a six-player individual Stableford round, suppose Alex's Course Handicap is 8 and the Committee uses the Appendix C 95% recommendation: 8 x 0.95 = 7.60, which rounds to a Playing Handicap of 8 under the competition's rounding procedure. If Alex scores 5 on a par-4 hole where one stroke is received, the net 4 is par and earns the Committee's par-equivalent Stableford points; the Committee must publish its points table and any small-field adjustment.

Common questions
What is the fairest handicap game for six golfers?
Individual Stableford is a strong default because all six players share one field and use individual handicaps. Confirm the allowance and points table in the Terms of Competition rather than assuming a social house rule is official.
Can six golfers play handicap match play together?
Not as one ordinary two-opponent match. Set up three pairings, or use recognised three-ball match play in which each player plays a separate match against the other two; state the handicap procedure and rotation before tee-off.
What handicap allowance applies to six-player teams?
There is no single six-player allowance. Appendix C lists four-ball match play 90%, four-ball stroke play 85%, and foursomes 50% of combined team handicap. Two-player scramble is 35% low and 15% high, but local playing conditions still need to be written down.
Can we use 100% handicaps for a six-player Stableford?
Possibly, if the Committee chooses it in the Terms of Competition. Appendix C recommends 95% for individual Stableford, while R&A small-field guidance says 100% could be considered for fields under 30; that is a competition decision, not an automatic six-player rule.
How do handicaps work in a four-ball game for six?
Create three two-player sides and use the allowance for the selected four-ball form. Each partner plays their own ball and the lower partner score is the side score on a hole; in match play, handicap strokes are applied between sides according to the competition terms.
Is a six-player scramble covered by the Rules of Golf?
Divide the six into three two-player scramble sides, but remember scramble procedures are not one fully prescribed Rules format. Agree selected-shot, minimum-drive, placement, scoring and allowance terms before play; Appendix C lists a two-player allowance, not a universal six-player one.
