Best first choice
Individual Stableford. It lets all seven players compete in the same field without forcing an uneven split into teams. The recognised scoring method also limits the damage from a disastrous hole because a hole can finish with zero points rather than requiring a long stroke-play score.
What to agree before play
Seven is too many for a normal single match or one team side; use separate tee times or pods for head-to-head formats. Wolf's seven-hole rotation does not repeat evenly over 18 holes, so publish the order and agree how any partner or solo points are settled. Do not apply a four-player scramble allowance to a three- or seven-player arrangement; the committee or group must set and state its own competition terms.
Table
| Game or arrangement | Why it fits |
|---|---|
| Individual Stableford | Seven players can compete in one field, with points rewarding each player's own hole-by-hole result and no teams to balance. |
| Individual stroke play | Everyone plays their own ball and the lowest gross or agreed net total wins, making the scoring easy to compare across seven players. |
| Skins | A casual per-hole pot keeps all seven involved; agree the carry-over and tie rules before tee-off rather than treating it as a Rules of Golf format. |
| Wolf | The rotating player chooses a partner or goes alone on each hole, creating changing two-person sides; with seven, publish the rotation because turns are not equal over 18 holes. |
| Seven-player scramble rotation | Split into a four-player team and a three-player team, or rotate the seventh player between teams, but treat this as an event arrangement with written house rules, not a single official seven-player allowance. |
| Three-ball match-play pods | Run a small, separately scheduled pod or rotate opponents across holes; this is a practical arrangement, not one seven-player match. |
Worked example
In a scratch Stableford example, Alex makes 5 on a par-4 hole, Ben 4, Chris 6, Dana 4, Erin 5, Fran 7 and Grace 3. Against the par target, Ben, Dana and Grace score 2 points, Alex and Erin 1, and Chris and Fran 0, for a seven-player hole total of 8 points; the numbers are illustrative, not historical results.
Rule reference: Rule 21.1 (Stableford); Rule 3.1a and 3.2 (match play); WHS Appendix C (handicap allowances); Rules 22 and 23 (foursomes and four-ball)

Common questions
What is the best golf game for seven players?
Individual Stableford is the cleanest first choice: all seven can play in one field, and the score is points rather than a head-to-head pairing. Agree whether the competition is gross or handicap before starting.
Can seven golfers play one match-play game?
Not as one ordinary two-sided match. Match play is an opponent-versus-opponent or side-versus-side competition, so seven players should use separate matches, a rotation or small pods, with results and tee times agreed in advance.
Can seven golfers play a scramble?
Yes, as a house-organised arrangement such as four players against three, or with a rotating player, but it is not covered by the four-player, three-player or two-player scramble allowances in WHS Appendix C. Set team sizes, selection rules and any handicap adjustment in the Terms of Competition.
What handicap allowance applies to seven players in Stableford?
For individual Stableford, WHS Appendix C recommends 95% of each player's unrounded Course Handicap, but the national association, club or competition committee may set the allowance. It is not a special seven-player percentage.
Is Wolf an official Rules of Golf format?
Wolf is a casual side game, not a format with a dedicated Rules of Golf scoring rule. Use the Rules of Golf for play where applicable, then write the rotation, partner choice, solo scoring and any stakes as house terms.
How should seven players keep the round moving?
Prefer one individual field with ready scoring, or split into separate groups where permitted by the course. A seven-player team arrangement can create extra discussion around shot selection, rotation and handicap terms, so decide those before the first tee.
