Best first choice
Individual Stableford. It lets all eight golfers play their own ball in one field and compares points rather than requiring a large match-play bracket. It is also specifically covered as a form of stroke play, with the Committee able to set the fixed target score and WHS Appendix C listing a 95% recommended allowance for individual Stableford.
What to agree before play
Trying to put all eight players into one head-to-head match: official match play is between a player or side and an opponent, so use separate matches or a team competition. Calling a scramble or skins game a single Rules-defined format: the Rules say scrambles can be adapted, while skins need agreed house rules for ties, carry-overs and settlement. Using a handicap percentage without checking the format and Terms of the Competition: WHS Appendix C recommendations differ between individual Stableford, four-ball, foursomes, team scoring and scrambles.
Table
| Game or arrangement | Why it fits |
|---|---|
| Individual Stableford | All eight players can compete in one field on points, so the format stays meaningful without forcing teams or head-to-head pairings. |
| Four-player scramble teams | Split the group into two teams of four, with every player contributing shots and the published four-player allowance available as a starting point. |
| Four-ball match play | Make four separate two-against-two matches, giving all eight players a direct opponent while retaining each partner's own ball. |
| Foursomes match play | Run two four-player matches, with each side of two partners alternating shots; this creates a genuinely collaborative game for eight without placing eight players in one match. |
| Individual match-play knockout | Seed eight players into four opening matches, then run semi-finals and a final over the event's agreed schedule; it suits a group that wants direct consequences for each hole. |
| Best 2 of 4 Stableford or stroke play | Divide the field into two teams of four and count the best two player results on each hole, with the Committee setting the terms and handicap approach. |
| Skins | Use eight individual players with a written house rule for ties, carry-overs and any money; this is a casual side game, not a Rules-defined format. |
Worked example
For a two-team, four-player scramble, suppose Alex, Ben, Chris and Dana have Course Handicaps of 8, 10, 16 and 20. The four-player allowance components are 25% x 8 = 2.0, 20% x 10 = 2.0, 15% x 16 = 2.4 and 10% x 20 = 2.0, totalling 8.4 strokes; if the Committee's rounding procedure produces 8, a gross team score of 72 would be 64 net. The same arrangement is then run by the second team of four under the event's terms.

Common questions
Can eight golfers play Stableford together?
Yes. Stableford is an individual form of stroke play, so all eight can be one field, provided the Committee sets the fixed target score and scoring terms. Keep groups to the course's permitted number and use separate tee times if needed.
What is the cleanest team game for eight players?
Two four-player scramble teams are a practical choice when the group wants one result per team and a forgiving, collaborative format. Scramble procedures and tie rules should be written into the Terms of the Competition because the Rules allow such forms to be adapted.
How can eight golfers play four-ball match play?
Set up four separate matches, each with two sides of two. Under Rule 23, partners play separate balls and the side's hole score is the lower partner score; set the match draw and handicap terms before play.
What handicap allowance applies to eight-player games?
It depends on the selected format, not simply on the group size. WHS Appendix C recommends 95% for individual Stableford, 90% for four-ball match play, 50% of combined team handicap for foursomes, and 25%/20%/15%/10% for a four-player scramble, subject to the Committee and national association terms.
Can all eight golfers play one foursomes match?
Not as the standard Rule 22 side structure: foursomes is played by two partners as a side. For eight players, run two separate foursomes matches or create a team event with clearly stated competition terms rather than implying that one eight-player match is standard.
Are skins governed by the Rules of Golf?
Skins is a casual side-game arrangement rather than a form specifically set out in the Rules of Golf. Agree how ties, carry-overs, concessions and any dollar stakes work before teeing off, and do not describe the house settlement as an official Rules requirement.
