Best first choice

Individual Stableford. It lets all seven players compete in the same field without unequal teams or a seven-player head-to-head match. The WHS Appendix C recommended allowance is 95% for individual Stableford, and Rule 21.1 awards points hole by hole against the committee's fixed target.

What to agree before play

Do not apply the four-ball, foursomes or scramble percentages to an individual game; those allowances are for different formats. Seven players cannot all be opponents in one ordinary singles match, so round-robin and three-ball options need planned groups, tee times or rounds. A committee or national association may set a different allowance, and the Terms of the Competition should state it; casual side games need their own agreed scoring and settlement rules.

Table

Game or arrangementWhy it fits
Individual Stableford All seven can play in one handicap field, with points based on net scores and a 95% recommended allowance.
Individual net stroke play Seven players can compete together on total net strokes, using the 95% individual stroke-play allowance.
Individual Par/Bogey Each player competes against the committee's fixed target on every hole, so seven players can share a field while recording plus, level or minus results; the recommended individual allowance is 95%.
Individual Maximum Score Seven players can play a net maximum-score competition, which caps a hole and can prevent one blow-up from delaying the group; the recommended individual allowance is 95%.
Round-robin singles match play Arrange separate head-to-head matches across tee times or rounds, rather than pretending seven people form one match; individual match play uses a 100% recommended allowance.
Three-ball match play Run groups of three in which each player has an individual match against both others at once; split seven players into practical groups and use the individual match-play allowance, subject to the committee's terms.

Worked example

Illustrative only: assume Alex has a Course Handicap of 12 and the competition uses the recommended 95% individual Stableford allowance. The unrounded calculation is 12 × 0.95 = 11.4, which is the value to take through the committee's prescribed Playing Handicap rounding; on a par-4 hole where Alex makes 5 and receives one stroke, the net 4 matches par and earns 2 Stableford points. The same calculation is made separately for each of the seven players; the lowest score is not automatically the winner because Stableford ranks total points.

Common questions

What is the best handicap game for seven golfers?

Individual Stableford is the cleanest default. All seven can play together in one field, and the recommended WHS allowance is 95% for individual Stableford; the committee should confirm the allowance in the Terms of the Competition.

Can seven golfers play one match-play game together?

Not as one ordinary singles match. Use separate singles matches in a round robin, or use three-ball match play for groups of three; Rule 21.4 defines three-ball as each of three players playing an individual match against the other two at the same time.

How is the handicap calculated for a seven-player Stableford?

Start with each player's unrounded Course Handicap, apply the committee's chosen allowance, and then complete the Playing Handicap calculation and rounding. Appendix C recommends 95% for individual Stableford; it is not a 95% reduction of Handicap Index used directly.

Can I use a four-ball allowance for seven individual players?

No. The 85% or 90% four-ball recommendations belong to four-ball stroke-play or match-play sides. They should not be transplanted to an individual Stableford, stroke-play, Par/Bogey or Maximum Score competition.

What if the seven players want match play and a handicap?

Use a schedule of singles matches or three-ball groups. For individual match play, Appendix C recommends 100%; after allowances, the lowest Playing Handicap normally plays from zero and the others receive the difference, with the committee setting the competition terms.

Do all seven need to play in one group?

No. Seven is better treated as a field or as planned groups. If the format needs teams or match-play opponents, use separate tee times or rounds and publish the rotation, scoring and any tie-break procedure before play.
