Best first choice

Four-ball match play. It uses all eight golfers efficiently as two concurrent head-to-head matches, while each partner plays their own ball and the lower score for the side counts on each hole. It is easier to explain and score than a full round robin, and the committee can apply the WHS recommended four-ball match-play allowance of 90% subject to the Terms of Competition.

What to agree before play

Eight golfers cannot play one ordinary head-to-head match together; organise two matches or a team event instead. A round robin needs seven matches per player, so it can require several rounds and creates a scheduling burden. Greensomes, tie-breaks, pairings and points in a team day need written house terms; do not assume a casual variation has a universal Rules of Golf or WHS allowance.

Table

Game or arrangementWhy it fits
Four-ball match play Split eight golfers into two head-to-head matches, with each side's lower score on a hole counting, so partners can contribute without everyone playing one ball.
Foursomes match play Split eight golfers into four two-player sides and run two alternate-shot matches, a compact team format that rewards partnership and keeps the field to four sides.
Singles knockout match play Seed eight individuals into a quarter-final bracket, then play semi-finals and a final, giving every match a direct opponent and a clear winner.
Singles round robin match play Give each golfer seven scheduled singles matches, producing a full league but requiring several rounds or tee times rather than one group.
Four-versus-four team match play Divide the eight into two teams and combine several singles and partner matches under pre-set points, which creates a team result without pretending eight golfers form one match.
Greensomes match play arrangement Pair the eight and use a locally agreed drive-and-select-then-foursomes procedure, clearly documented as a house format rather than a separately defined Rules of Golf format.

Worked example

Illustrative four-ball match-play setup: Alex (Course Handicap 10) and Ben (20) play Chris (30) and Dana (40). Using the WHS Appendix C recommended 90% allowance, the four individual differences from the lowest handicap are 0, 10, 20 and 30; 90% gives 0, 9, 18 and 27 strokes respectively, with strokes allocated by the Committee's Terms of Competition. The two sides then compare their lower net score on each hole; a side ahead by more holes than remain wins.

Common questions

Can eight golfers play one match-play group?

Not as one ordinary head-to-head match under the normal individual format. Use two concurrent singles or four-ball matches, or make the eight a team competition whose Terms of Competition combine several matches.

What is the best match-play format for eight players?

Four-ball match play is a strong practical choice: eight golfers become two four-player matches, and each partner plays their own ball while the side's lower score counts. It gives a team feel without the workload of a seven-round round robin.

What handicap allowance should four-ball match play use?

WHS Appendix C recommends 90% for four-ball match play. The committee must state the allowance in the Terms of Competition; after allowances, match-play strokes normally use the lowest Playing Handicap as zero relative to the others.

How does foursomes match play work for eight golfers?

Pair the eight into four sides and run two matches. Each side plays one ball with partners alternating strokes and alternating who tees off first on each hole; WHS Appendix C recommends 50% of the difference between the teams' combined Course Handicaps for foursomes match play.

Is a greensomes match-play day an official Rules format?

Greensomes is a commonly used practical arrangement, but the exact drive-selection and subsequent play terms must be set by the competition committee. Do not transplant the foursomes allowance automatically; specify an approved handicap method or mark the event as social.

Does a match finish when a player is three up with two holes left?

Yes. Under Rule 3.2a, a player wins once they lead by more holes than remain, so the result is 3 and 2. 'Dormie' describes a match state and is not a format.
