Best first choice
Singles match-play draw. It uses the clearest recognised form of match play and avoids inventing a special nine-player scoring formula. With nine players, schedule separate tee times and publish one bye or reserve position rather than pretending that all nine can play one head-to-head match.
What to agree before play
Nine is odd, so a single-round draw needs one bye or an explicitly rotated reserve; do not quietly give the same player the advantage every round. Four-ball and foursomes require sides of two, so nine players cannot make a single even-sided match; use pods, rotations or separate tee times. Team totals, points, match length, tie-breaks and any rotation are Terms of the Competition, not automatic consequences of the Rules of Golf.
Table
| Game or arrangement | Why it fits |
|---|---|
| Singles match-play draw | Split the nine players into head-to-head matches across tee times, with one bye or a scheduled reserve in each round. |
| Four-ball match play pods | Run two four-player matches and rotate the ninth player into a later match or reserve slot; each side uses the lower score on each hole. |
| Foursomes match play | Form four two-player sides for a match, then rotate the ninth player through a later pairing or a separate match; partners alternate shots. |
| Three-team match play aggregate | Make three teams of three and let the Committee define which singles or side matches count towards the team result; this is an event arrangement, not a new Rules format. |
| Round-robin singles match play | Schedule shorter head-to-head matches so all nine meet over several sessions, accepting that a full everyone-plays-everyone schedule needs 36 matches. |
| Knockout match-play bracket | Use an eight-player bracket and give the ninth a clearly published play-in or bye arrangement; it is practical for a staged event, not nine players in one group. |
Worked example
Illustrative singles example: Alex has a Playing Handicap of 12 and Ben 18, so in a handicap singles match Ben receives 6 strokes, allocated at the six lowest stroke-index holes; if Alex wins 4 holes, Ben wins 3 and 11 are halved, Alex wins 1 up. This is an illustrative calculation, not real player data.

Common questions
Can nine golfers play one match-play group?
No. Match play is head-to-head between a player or side and an opponent or side. For nine golfers, use separate tee times, pods, a team event or a staged draw, and state the bye or rotation in the Terms of the Competition.
What is the simplest match-play format for nine players?
A singles match-play draw is the simplest: pair players for each round, give one player a published bye when necessary, and decide whether the event is a knockout, league or short-match round robin. The draw and tie-break terms are editorial event choices.
What handicap allowance applies to nine-player match play?
For individual match play, WHS Appendix C recommends 100% of each player’s Playing Handicap. The lowest Playing Handicap normally plays from zero and the others receive the difference, but a Committee should specify the allowance and stroke allocation in the Terms of the Competition; do not transplant the four-ball 90% allowance to singles.
Can nine players use four-ball match play?
Yes, but not as one nine-player side. Four-ball uses two partners per side, so organise four-player matches and rotate or reserve the ninth player, or run multiple rounds with changing partners; publish how an absent or rotating partner is handled.
Is a nine-player round robin a standard Rules format?
Round robin describes the schedule rather than a separate form of play in the Rules. It can schedule singles or side matches, but the organiser must set match length, points, byes, handicap treatment and tie-breaks; a full nine-player everyone-plays-everyone schedule is 36 head-to-head matches.
How should money settle in a nine-player match-play event?
Only use stakes if every player agrees before play. Put the settlement in the house rules, such as a fixed entry pool paid to the knockout winner or agreed points prizes; the Rules of Golf do not create a betting settlement method.
