scramble golf rules USA: In the United States, a scramble is a team format whose detailed conditions are set for the event rather than a standalone format in the Rules of Golf. The USGA describes each player hitting from the tee, the team choosing the best shot, and all players playing from that location until the hole is completed; the team handicap is deducted from gross score. See WHS Appendix C for the handicap context.

Regional conventions and their limits

In the United States, a scramble is a team format whose detailed conditions are set for the event rather than a standalone format in the Rules of Golf. The USGA describes each player hitting from the tee, the team choosing the best shot, and all players playing from that location until the hole is completed; the team handicap is deducted from gross score. For a four-player team, the USGA Rules of Handicapping Appendix C recommends 25% of the lowest Course Handicap, 20% of the second, 15% of the third and 10% of the highest. It also lists 30%/20%/10% for three players and 35% low/15% high for two players. These are recommendations, not an automatic entitlement: the Committee should state the allowance and other conditions in the Terms of the Competition. Confirm the team size, whether a minimum number of drives is required, placement limits, preferred lies, tie-break method and whether the round is handicap-postable in the event sheet. Do not assume a club's drive quota or placement distance is a US national rule.

Local nameScramble. The USGA's committee guidance uses the name Scramble and describes the team selecting the best shot after each stroke. Event names such as Texas scramble or Ambrose may be used by particular organisers, but this review found no USGA evidence that either is a universal US national synonym.

Worked example

Illustrative only: using the USGA's displayed four-player example, Alex, Ben, Chris and Dana have Course Handicaps 10.335, 15.353, 28.255 and 37.574. Applying 25%, 20%, 15% and 10% gives 2.583 + 3.071 + 4.238 + 3.757 = 13.649, which rounds to a team Playing Handicap of 14; the Committee's Terms should confirm the calculation and rounding.

Common questions

Is a scramble an official format in the US Rules of Golf?

The USGA provides scramble guidance and recommended WHS allowances, but a scramble's playing conditions are set in the event's Terms of the Competition. Do not treat a club's house conditions as universal Rules of Golf requirements.

What handicap allowance does a four-player US scramble use?

The USGA Appendix C recommendation is 25% of the lowest Course Handicap, then 20%, 15% and 10% of the higher handicaps. The Committee should publish the allowance and may adjust it for the field or competition conditions.

Does every US scramble require a minimum number of drives?

No national minimum drive quota is established by the USGA sources used here. A club or event may require one, but it must be written in the Terms of the Competition and should not be presented as a US-wide rule.

Are Ambrose and Texas scramble official US names for the same game?

Names vary by organiser. This record uses Scramble because that is the name in the USGA guidance; it does not claim that Ambrose or Texas scramble is a universal US synonym.

When is the scramble team handicap calculated?

Use each player's unrounded Course Handicap when calculating the team Playing Handicap under the adopted Appendix C allowance. In the USGA four-player example, the weighted contributions total 13.649 and round to 14.

Who decides the tie-break and other local conditions?

The competition Committee should publish clear Terms, including the format, handicap allowance and relevant conditions. A tie-break, drive quota or placement restriction therefore needs event-specific wording.
