Best first choice

Four-ball is the best first choice for two partners playing against another pair or a field. Each golfer keeps their own ball, while the lower score on each hole gives the side a natural safety net and keeps both players involved.

What to agree before play

Do not describe two players as a complete four-ball match: four-ball competition normally needs another two-player side or a field to play against. Agree whether the round is match play or stroke play before teeing off; the scoring objective and handicap treatment differ. For foursomes, Greensomes, Chapman/Pinehurst and a scramble, write the starting order, ball-selection and minimum-shot conditions into the event terms; casual versions vary.

Table

Game or arrangementWhy it fits
Four-ball Two partners each play their own ball and the side counts the lower score, so it rewards a pair without requiring alternate shots.
Foursomes (alternate shot) Two partners share one ball and alternate strokes, making it a genuine two-person side for match play or stroke play.
Greensomes Both partners tee off, the pair selects one tee shot, then plays alternate shot; it keeps both players involved in the opening decision.
Pinehurst/Chapman Both partners tee off, play the partner's ball for the second shot, select one ball, then finish with alternate shots; it adds a strategic choice to a two-person side.
Two-player scramble Both partners hit each shot, select one result, and continue from there; it is a practical, social option when the pair wants collaboration rather than head-to-head pressure.
Total score of partners Each partner plays their own ball and the two scores are added, a useful team-against-field arrangement when you want both scores to matter.

Worked example

Illustrative handicap example: Alex has a Course Handicap of 8 and Ben 16. In a Chapman/Pinehurst arrangement using the WHS Appendix C recommendation, the side allowance is 60% of 8 plus 40% of 16 = 4.8 + 6.4 = 11.2, rounded to 11; the competition terms should state the rounding and stroke-allocation procedure.

Common questions

Can two players use a team format without four golfers?

Yes, two golfers can form one side and play against another side or a wider field. A four-ball match itself needs two sides, so two people alone can practise the format but cannot stage a two-versus-two match without opponents.

What is the simplest two-player team format?

Four-ball is usually the simplest to explain: both partners play their own balls and the side uses the lower score on each hole. It is an editorial recommendation, not a rule that makes it best for every group.

How does alternate shot work for two players?

In foursomes, partners form one side, share one ball, alternate who tees off on each hole, and then alternate strokes until the hole is complete. This is governed by Rule 22 when the competition uses the Rules of Golf.

What handicap allowance should a two-player team use?

It depends on the format and whether it is match or stroke play. WHS Appendix C recommends 90% for four-ball match play, 85% for four-ball stroke play, 50% of combined team handicap for foursomes, 60% low plus 40% high for Greensomes and Pinehurst/Chapman, and 35% low plus 15% high for a two-player scramble; the Committee or event terms should confirm the allowance.

Are Ambrose and Texas scramble automatically the same as a two-player scramble?

No. Ambrose is commonly used for a scramble-style event and Texas Scramble is described by the R&A as a four-person scramble variant. For two players, call the arrangement a two-player scramble and state its house conditions rather than importing a four-person variant without checking the event terms.

Can two partners play total-score team golf?

Yes. Each partner plays their own ball and the side adds both scores. It is a practical team-against-field arrangement, but the competition should state whether gross or net scores count and which handicap allowance applies.
