Best first choice
Three-player scramble. It uses all three players on every shot while giving the group a genuine team format designed for two, three or four-person teams. The 2024 WHS Appendix C recommendation also provides a specific three-player scramble allowance, so a handicap event has a defensible starting point before the Committee confirms its Terms of Competition.
What to agree before play
A scramble is not self-defining: agree minimum tee-shot quotas, placement rules and whether the chosen player may hit the next shot before starting. Do not call every three-player team arrangement a four-ball or foursomes match; those Rules formats are built around two-player sides, while Rule 24 leaves team scoring terms to the Committee. For a handicap competition, do not apply the 30%/20%/10% scramble recommendation to a different game without checking the format and the Committee's stated allowance.
Table
| Game or arrangement | Why it fits |
|---|---|
| Three-player scramble | All three players contribute tee shots and the team selects one shot at each stage, making it a natural fixed team for three. |
| Best 2 of 3 aggregate | Each player completes the hole and the two lowest gross or net scores count, a practical team-competition arrangement that keeps one poor hole from deciding the team result. |
| Three-player aggregate stroke play | All three individual scores count to one team total, a simple arrangement when the group wants every player to matter on every hole. |
| Threesomes (2 v 1 alternate shot) | Two players form a side playing one ball alternately against the third player, using the recognised Rules variation for a three-person head-to-head. |
| Rotating 2 v 1 match play | Rotate who plays as the single-player side, an editorial house arrangement that gives each person a turn but needs agreed handicap and pairing terms. |
Worked example
Illustrative three-player scramble: Alex, Ben and Chris have Course Handicaps 8, 16 and 24. Applying the WHS Appendix C recommendation gives 30% x 8 = 2.4, 20% x 16 = 3.2 and 10% x 24 = 2.4, for a team allowance of 8.0 strokes; if the team shoots 78 gross, its illustrative net score is 70. The Committee must confirm the competition terms and rounding treatment.

Common questions
Can three golfers play a proper team format?
Yes. A three-player scramble is expressly described by the R&A as a two-, three- or four-person team format. Other three-player team results can be arranged under Rule 24, but the Committee must state how many scores count and how ties and handicaps are settled.
What is the recommended handicap allowance for a three-player scramble?
WHS Appendix C recommends 30% of the lowest Course Handicap, 20% of the middle Course Handicap and 10% of the highest Course Handicap. It is a recommendation for that scramble format, applied to the unrounded Course Handicap; the competition Terms should confirm the allowance and rounding.
Can three players play foursomes?
Not as an ordinary three-person side: Rule 22 defines foursomes as two partners playing one ball in alternating order. The Rules describe Threesomes as a variation in which one individual plays against a side of two partners who alternate shots, which is the relevant three-player head-to-head option.
Is best 2 of 3 an official named format?
Treat it as a team-competition arrangement rather than an automatically standardised named format. Rule 24 says the Committee decides the form of play and how the overall team score is calculated, so write the counting-score rule, handicap method and tie-breaker before play.
Should all three players be in one team for a match?
Only if the agreed format supports it. A three-player scramble or aggregate team competes against other teams or a field; a head-to-head alternative is Threesomes, with two players as one side against the third. Do not pretend three players can form a conventional 2-v-2 match.
Does a scramble allowance automatically apply to a rotating 2 v 1 game?
No. The 30%/20%/10% recommendation is specifically listed for a three-player scramble. A rotating 2 v 1 match is a different house arrangement, so the Committee must specify a fair handicap method rather than transplanting the scramble percentage.
