Best first choice
Four-ball match play. It gives eight golfers four active two-versus-two matches, so everyone has a partner and a direct opponent without forcing all eight into one group. It also preserves a clear team result while allowing each golfer to play their own ball, which is easier to follow than alternate shot for a mixed-ability group.
What to agree before play
Do not send all eight golfers out as one group; use separate tee times or concurrent pairings because a single group of eight is slow and may breach the Committee's pace arrangements. Four-ball and foursomes are pairs formats, so an eight-player team event needs written pairings and a method for aggregating match points; those team arrangements are not automatically supplied by Rules 22 or 23. Scramble and best-of-four scoring need Terms of the Competition, including selection limits, handicap treatment and tie-break procedure; do not transplant a four-player scramble allowance to another team size.
Table
| Game or arrangement | Why it fits |
|---|---|
| Four-ball match play | Split eight golfers into two four-player teams and award team points from two simultaneous two-versus-two matches. |
| Foursomes match play | Pair the eight golfers into four alternate-shot matches, with each team's match result contributing to the overall contest. |
| Four-player scramble | Make two teams of four and have each team play a scramble, subject to the event's written terms. |
| Best 2 of 4 stroke play | Use two teams of four and count each team's two best net scores per hole, making the result less dependent on one player. |
| Best 3 of 4 stroke play | Use two teams of four and count three net scores per hole when you want most of every team's round to matter. |
| Round-robin match-play teams | Arrange three short rounds of four two-versus-two matches, rotating partners and opponents so all eight stay involved; this is a practical event arrangement, not a separate Rules-defined format. |
Worked example
In one four-ball match, Alex and Ben play Chris and Dana. On a hole, Alex scores 5, Ben 4, Chris 5 and Dana 6; the Alex-Ben side records 4, the Chris-Dana side records 5, so Alex and Ben win that hole. The organiser can award that match's point to their wider four-player team under the event terms.

Common questions
How should eight golfers be split for a team format?
For four-ball or foursomes, make four pairs and run four matches, or use two matches at a time in a wider team contest. For a four-player scramble or best-of-four event, use two teams of four and publish the scoring and tie-break terms before play.
Can eight golfers play one four-ball match?
Not as one ordinary four-ball side. Under Rule 23, a side is two partners, each playing a separate ball and counting the lower score. With eight golfers, run multiple four-ball matches and aggregate them as a team competition under the event terms.
What handicap allowance applies to an eight-player team event?
There is no single allowance for every eight-player arrangement. WHS Appendix C recommends 90% for four-ball match play, 85% for four-ball stroke play, 50% of combined team handicap for foursomes, 25/20/15/10% from lowest to highest for a four-player scramble, 85% for best 2 of 4 stroke play and 100% for best 3 of 4 stroke play. The Committee should state the allowance and calculation method in the Terms of the Competition.
Is a four-player scramble an official Rules of Golf format?
The Rules of Golf do not provide a general scramble rule in Rules 1-25. A scramble is a competition arrangement with event terms. WHS Appendix C gives recommended allowances for two-, three- and four-player scrambles, but that does not replace the organiser's written playing procedure.
How can an eight-player event avoid unequal playing time?
Use two concurrent four-ball or foursomes matches, or schedule four matches in separate tee times. For a round robin, publish the three pairing rounds in advance and rotate partners or opponents deliberately; the rotation is an editorial design choice, not a claim that the Rules prescribe one schedule.
Should four-ball or foursomes be chosen for a mixed-ability group of eight?
Four-ball is usually the more forgiving editorial choice because each golfer plays their own ball and the side uses the lower score. Foursomes can be more compact but asks partners to alternate one ball and alternate who tees off, so pairing and communication matter more.
