Best first choice
Choose a three-player scramble divided into three teams of three. The format naturally fits nine because each team has the same number of players and the R&A describes scramble as a two-, three- or four-person team format. It is also easier to score than a nine-player hybrid, while the Committee can state any tee-shot minimums or other event conditions before play.
What to agree before play
Do not call a three-team house arrangement an official Rules of Golf format when the Rules only define the underlying form. Do not use a four-player scramble allowance for three-player teams; WHS Appendix C lists a separate recommended 30% low, 20% middle and 10% high allowance for a three-player scramble. If using pairs, one of nine golfers will otherwise be left out or treated differently, so publish the rotation, solo scoring and tie-breaker before the first tee.
Table
| Game or arrangement | Why it fits |
|---|---|
| Three-player scramble | Split nine golfers into three teams of three; the recognised scramble structure keeps every player involved and gives the group one clear team score. |
| Three-team best-two-of-three stroke play | Make three teams of three and count the best two gross or net scores on each hole; this is an editorial arrangement based on the Committee choosing how team scores count, not a separate Rules of Golf format. |
| Three-team four-ball aggregate | Create three teams of three, count the lowest two scores on each hole, and publish the scoring and handicap method before play; this adapts the four-ball idea for an odd group and is a house format. |
| Three-team singles round robin | Run a team match in which each golfer plays an individual opponent from another team in a planned set of pairings; combine match points for the team, with the schedule preventing one player from carrying every pairing. |
| Foursomes pair block plus rotating individual | Use four two-player alternate-shot sides and rotate the ninth golfer through the pairings or score that player separately; this is a practical arrangement, not a recognised nine-player format. |
| Three-player greensomes | Organise three teams of three only if the Committee defines how the third player participates, because standard greensomes is a two-partner variation and the nine-player version needs house rules. |
| Three-team captain's choice match | Have three teams of three play a Committee-defined points match, with each hole's result and any tie-breaker stated in advance; it is a team competition structure rather than an official named game. |
Worked example
For a gross three-player scramble, Alex, Ben and Chris form Team 1. On a hole they choose Ben's tee shot, Alex's second, Chris's third and hole out in 4; Dana, Eli and Finn score 5, and Grace, Hannah and Ian score 6, so Team 1 wins that hole in a lowest-score team contest. These names and scores are illustrative, not historical results.

Common questions
Can nine golfers play one standard team format together?
Not as one nine-player side under the standard partner formats. The practical solution is three teams of three, or a Committee-defined rotation; nine golfers should also be split into suitable playing groups for pace and safety rather than treated as one on-course group.
What is the simplest team format for nine players?
A three-player scramble is usually the cleanest editorial recommendation: make three equal teams, choose one shot at each stage, and record one team score per hole. Confirm the event conditions, including any minimum number of tee shots, before play.
What handicap allowance applies to a three-player scramble?
WHS Appendix C recommends 30% of the lowest Course Handicap, 20% of the middle and 10% of the highest for a three-player scramble. The allowance is applied to the unrounded Course Handicap, and the Committee should state the allowance and calculation in the Terms of Competition.
Can we use four-ball with three players on a team?
That is not standard four-ball as defined in Rule 23, which is two partners playing separate balls with the lower score counting for the side. A three-player version can be a house arrangement, but the Committee must define how many scores count and how handicaps and ties are handled.
How should three teams of three settle a tie?
Choose the tie-breaker before play, such as the last six, three and one holes on the team score, or a sudden-death hole with a stated player rotation. This is an editorial competition condition, not a universal rule for every nine-player team game.
Is a nine-player scramble allowance automatically official?
No. The WHS table gives a recommended allowance for a three-player scramble, not a special allowance for nine golfers as one team. Split the field into three-player teams and have the Committee confirm the format, allowance and terms before the competition.
