What is Aggregate Score in golf? An aggregate score is the combined total of a player's or side's scores over two or more rounds, or another defined set of holes. For an illustrative two-round event, Alex scores 82 and 79, so Alex's gross aggregate score is 161; if the event's Terms use net scores instead, the published aggregate must be calculated from the two net round scores.

Meaning

An aggregate score is the combined total of a player's or side's scores over two or more rounds, or another defined set of holes. It is usually calculated by adding the relevant hole or round scores, with the competition's Terms specifying whether gross or net scores apply.

How it matters in match play

Aggregate score is not the normal basis for deciding an individual match: the Rules describe match play as a contest based on holes won, lost or tied. A competition may still record combined scores for a separate aggregate prize or multi-match table, but that is a competition arrangement and must be stated in the Terms; it does not replace the match result.

Common questions

How do you calculate an aggregate score in golf?

Add the scores from the rounds or holes included by the competition. For example, 82 plus 79 gives a gross aggregate of 161. Check the Terms of the Competition first, because the event may require gross scores, net scores or a stated adjustment.

Is an aggregate score used to decide a match-play winner?

Not normally. Individual match play is decided by comparing holes won, lost or tied, not by adding every stroke across the match. An organiser can use an aggregate total for a separate competition or ranking only if that arrangement is stated clearly.

What is the difference between aggregate score and final score?

Aggregate score emphasises a combined total across multiple included rounds or sections. Final score is a broader label for the score recorded at the end of a round or competition, so a final score can be one round while an aggregate score combines several.

Can an aggregate score be gross or net?

Yes, if the competition defines it that way. A gross aggregate adds gross scores, while a net aggregate adds net scores after the applicable handicap adjustments. Do not assume an allowance or handicap method without checking the event Terms.

Is Aggregate Score an official Rules of Golf format?

The Rules describe how stroke-play totals and match-play results are determined, but Aggregate Score is not presented there as a standalone form of play. Treat the phrase as scoring terminology and follow the competition's published Terms for what is included.

Can match-play matches be combined into an aggregate score?

They can be combined for an event-specific table or prize when the Terms say how the combination works. The aggregate is then additional reporting; each individual match still needs its own result under the applicable match-play format.
