Meaning
Final Score is the result recorded when a round, competition or match ends. In stroke play it normally means total or net strokes; in match play it means the holes-up result, such as 2 up or 3 and 2, rather than an aggregate stroke total.
How it matters in match play
In match play, Final Score is a plain-English label for the completed match result. Players compete hole by hole, so the record normally states the winner and margin, or that the match was halved. A result such as 3 and 2 means the leader was three holes ahead with two holes left, so the match ended on the 16th; it is not a 16-hole stroke total.

Worked example
Alex wins holes 3, 7 and 12, while Ben wins holes 5 and 9 and the other holes are halved; Alex's Final Score is 1 up, not a total of Alex's strokes minus Ben's strokes.

Common questions
Is Final Score the same as Match Result?
They can describe the same completed outcome, but Match Result is the clearer match-play label. Final Score is broader: it can also describe a stroke-play total or net total. In match play, write the result in holes, such as 2 up or 3 and 2.
Does a match-play Final Score add up every stroke?
Usually no. Match play is decided by holes won, lost or tied. A final notation such as 1 up records the hole margin. The players may keep hole scores for administration or handicap purposes, but those strokes do not replace the match result.
What does 3 and 2 mean in a Final Score?
It means the winner was three holes ahead after 16 holes of an 18-hole match, with two holes remaining. The match was therefore over at that point. It is a match-play result, not a claim that the winner used three fewer strokes overall.
Can Final Score be a net score?
Yes, in stroke play a final score may be expressed as gross strokes or net strokes after handicap strokes are applied. In a handicap match, handicap strokes affect who wins individual holes; the completed match is still normally reported by holes, such as 2 up.
Is Final Score an official Rules of Golf term?
Not as a separately defined term in the cited match-play provisions. It is a useful editorial label for the completed result. The Rules specify how holes and matches are won and when the result becomes final, so competition organisers may prescribe the exact reporting format.
When does a match-play Final Score become final?
Under Rule 3.2a(5), the result becomes final when it is recorded on an official scoreboard or other identified place, or reported to a person identified by the Committee. A competition may also set administrative procedures for returning or recording results.
