Meaning

A Club Championship is a club-run competition intended to determine a champion for a stated division or field. Its conditions set eligibility, format, number of holes, handicap treatment, tie method and prizes; it may be played as Stroke Play, Match Play or another authorised format.

How it matters in match play

A Club Championship played as Match Play is a series of head-to-head matches, usually arranged from a draw or after qualifying, with the champion being the winner of the final. The club’s Terms of the Competition must say how the draw, handicaps, ties, withdrawals and reporting of results work. Under Rule 3.2, players are compared by holes won, lost or tied rather than by one aggregate score.

Common questions

Is a Club Championship always Match Play?

No. A club decides the competition format in its Terms of the Competition. Golf Australia guidance lists Stroke Play and Match Play as possible formats, so the name alone does not establish how scores or winners are determined.

Can a Club Championship use handicaps?

It can, if the club’s published conditions specify the handicap treatment. The Rules distinguish gross competitions, where handicap strokes are not applied, from net competitions, where they are; do not assume the treatment from the event name alone.

How is a Match-Play Club Championship winner decided?

Each match is decided by holes won, lost or tied. A player wins the match when they lead by more holes than remain, or when the opponent concedes or is disqualified; a tied match is extended under the stated competition arrangements.

Does every club use the same Club Championship rules?

No. The club’s Terms of the Competition control local details such as eligibility, field size, format, handicap treatment, tie resolution and prizes. Those conditions should be clear before entries open.

Is Club Championship an official Rules of Golf format?

No. It is an event name, not a standalone scoring format. The competition must identify its format and conditions, then apply the relevant Rules of Golf to that format.

Can a Club Championship start with Stroke Play qualifying and finish in Match Play?

Yes, if the Terms of the Competition provide for it. The R&A Committee Procedures discuss using Stroke Play qualifying to create a Match-Play draw and require the method for resolving qualifying ties to be specified.
