Meaning

A Match-Play Championship is a competition in which players or sides progress by winning head-to-head matches. Unlike a Stroke Play event decided by total strokes, each match is decided by holes won, lost or tied; the organiser's Terms of the Competition set the draw, qualifying and final procedure.

How it matters in match play

The name describes the championship structure rather than adding a separate scoring rule. Under the Rules of Golf, opponents compete on each hole, and a match ends when one player leads by more holes than remain, or when the opponent concedes or is disqualified. A championship may use a Knockout bracket, qualifying stage or other Committee-approved arrangement, so check its Terms of the Competition.

Common questions

Is a Match-Play Championship the same as Stroke Play?

No. Match play is decided by holes won, lost or tied between opponents, while regular stroke play is decided by total strokes across the round or rounds. A championship can use qualifying Stroke Play before its match-play section, but the Terms of the Competition must say so.

How is the winner decided in a Match-Play Championship?

Each match is won when a player leads by more holes than remain, or when the opponent concedes or is disqualified. If the match is tied after the stipulated round, the competition's Terms may require an Extra Hole or another stated procedure.

Does every Match-Play Championship use a knockout draw?

No. A Knockout bracket is common, but organisers can specify qualifying, flights, round-robin matches or another structure. Do not assume a particular draw, handicap method or tie procedure without reading that championship's Terms of the Competition.

Can handicaps be used in a Match-Play Championship?

Yes, if the Terms of the Competition make it a Handicap Competition and specify the applicable Playing Handicap and allowance. The Rules of Golf explain how handicap strokes operate in match play, but the championship's conditions determine whether handicaps are used.

Is Match-Play Championship an official Rules of Golf format name?

It is a useful competition label, not a separate scoring rule in addition to match play. The Rules of Golf define match play and its procedures; the Committee's Terms of the Competition supply the championship's draw and event-specific conditions.
