Meaning

A hole-by-hole score lists the strokes a player or side takes on each hole, rather than only a round total. It lets readers check individual hole results, identify scoring patterns and, in match play, see how each hole became won, lost or halved.

How it matters in match play

Match play is decided hole by hole, so a hole-by-hole score provides the underlying detail for the match score. Compare each player's gross strokes, or net strokes where handicap strokes apply, then mark the hole Won, Lost or Halved. The match can finish before all listed holes are played if one side leads by more holes than remain.

Common questions

Is a hole-by-hole score the same as a Match Score?

No. A hole-by-hole score is the detailed record for each hole. The Match Score is the running result expressed as holes up, down or all square after those hole results are compared.

Do I record strokes or only who won the hole?

Record the strokes for each player or side when you want an auditable card. In match play, those strokes determine which side wins or halves the hole, subject to any handicap strokes and concessions that apply under the competition's terms.

Can a match end before every hole has a score?

Yes. Under Rule 3.2a, the match ends when one player leads by more holes than remain, or when the opponent concedes or is disqualified. Any unused holes then have no played scores for that match.

Does a concession need a hole score?

Not necessarily. A conceded hole is won by the opponent under Rule 3.2a, and a conceded stroke is included in the opponent's score for the hole under Rule 3.2b. Record the convention required by the competition or scorecard so the result is clear.

Is there one official layout for a hole-by-hole score?

No single layout is identified here as a universal Rules of Golf template. Competitions may use a scorecard, match sheet or electronic record. The important practical distinction is to keep each hole's result and any relevant strokes or concessions clear enough to verify the match result.

Are the numbers in the example historical player scores?

No. Alex and Ben and the numbers are an illustrative worked example only. They are not presented as historical results or official competition data.
