What is Hole Score in golf? A Hole Score is the number of strokes a player takes to complete one hole, including any penalty strokes. On a par-4, Alex takes 4 strokes and Ben takes 5, so Alex wins the hole 4 to 5; if each takes 5, the hole is halved.

Meaning

A Hole Score is the number of strokes a player takes to complete one hole, including any penalty strokes. It may be recorded as a gross score or, in a handicap competition, adjusted to a net score after the applicable Handicap Strokes are applied.

How it matters in match play

In match play, the Hole Score is compared only with the opponent's score for that hole. The player with fewer strokes wins the hole; equal scores halve it. In a handicap match, the lower net score wins, so the comparison includes Handicap Strokes allocated to that hole. The match score is then updated hole by hole.

Worked example

On a par-4, Alex takes 4 strokes and Ben takes 5, so Alex wins the hole 4 to 5; if each takes 5, the hole is halved. In a handicap match, a 5 net 4 beats a gross 4 net 4 only by neither player, so the hole is halved.

Common questions

What is included in a Hole Score?

It includes all strokes made on the hole and any penalty strokes. In a scratch competition this is the gross score; in a handicap match, the relevant net score reflects the Handicap Strokes allocated to that hole.

Does the lower Hole Score always win in match play?

The lower score wins in a scratch match. In a handicap match, compare net scores after the applicable Handicap Strokes are applied. A concession or a general penalty can also decide the hole under the Rules of Golf.

Is a Hole Score the same as a Match Score?

No. A Hole Score is the strokes for one hole. A Match Score is the running result of holes won, lost or halved, such as 2 up after 12 holes.

What happens if a player picks up before holing out?

For handicap posting, when the Rules and format permit the player not to hole out, the player records the most likely score or Net Double Bogey, whichever is lower, as appropriate. That handicap-recording treatment is not a replacement for the match result determined under the competition's Rules.

Do I need a scorecard in match play?

The Rules of Golf do not require a scorecard in match play, although players commonly use one to track Hole Scores and the Match Score. The Committee or competition Terms may set additional administrative requirements.

Can a tied Hole Score be agreed before anyone plays?

No. Under Rule 3.2a, players may agree to treat a hole as tied only after at least one player has made a stroke to begin the hole, subject to the Rules.
