What is Match Score in golf? In match play, the match score is the current standing between opponents, expressed by holes won and lost or as all square. After 12 holes, Alex has won five holes and Ben has won three, with four holes halved, so Alex's match score is 2 up; that two-hole lead is illustrative house scoring, not historical player data.

Meaning

In match play, the match score is the current standing between opponents, expressed by holes won and lost or as all square. It is not the total number of strokes for the round: each hole is a separate contest, and the player who wins more holes has the better standing.

How it matters in match play

Match score is updated after each hole. A player may be 1 up, 2 down or all square, depending on the net result of holes won and lost. A match is won when a player leads by more holes than remain, so the match score also shows whether the result is already decided. In handicap match play, the lower net score wins the hole.

Common questions

Is match score the same as total strokes?

No. Match play compares opponents hole by hole. The match score records the balance of holes won, lost or tied, rather than adding every stroke from the round as stroke play does.

How do you write a match score?

Use the number of holes up or down, such as 2 up or 1 down, or write all square when neither side leads. A final result can also include the finish notation, such as 3 and 2, when the match ends before the last hole.

When does a match score decide the match?

The match is won when one player leads by more holes than remain to be played. The opponent may also concede the match, or be disqualified. If the match is tied after the final hole, the Terms of the Competition determine whether it is extended or ends tied.

Does handicap scoring change the match score?

It can change who wins an individual hole. In a handicap match, handicap strokes are given by hole and the lower net score wins; the resulting hole wins and losses then determine the match score.

Is match score an official Rules of Golf term?

The Rules of Golf use and explain the concept of knowing the match score, including whether a player leads by a number of holes or the match is all square. Local scorecard or competition notation may vary, so follow the Committee's Terms of the Competition for recording the result.
