What is Inactive Season in golf? Inactive Season is the period when scores played in a specified area cannot be submitted for handicap purposes. In an illustrative match, Alex plays a round in an area observing an Inactive Season and records 88; that score is not submitted for handicap purposes, while Ben’s 91 played in an area observing an Active Season may be submitted if it otherwise meets the acceptable-score requirements.

Meaning

Inactive Season is the period when scores played in a specified area cannot be submitted for handicap purposes. The relevant Authorized Association determines the period for the area where the round is played; dates and whether a season exists vary by jurisdiction.

How it matters in match play

Inactive Season is not a match-play scoring state or a special match format. It matters when players use handicaps: a score played in an area during its inactive period cannot be submitted for handicap purposes, so it cannot become a new Score Differential. Check the local Authorized Association rather than assuming a home club’s dates apply to every course.

Common questions

Who decides when an Inactive Season applies?

The Authorized Association with jurisdiction over the area where the round is played determines the period. A club must follow the applicable association schedule; the dates are not automatically the same everywhere.

Can I submit a score played elsewhere while my home club is in an Inactive Season?

Possibly. The relevant question is the season status in the area where the round was played. The USGA explains that a score played in an area observing an Active Season should be posted when it otherwise qualifies, even if the player’s home area is inactive; an away score is identified as such when posted.

Does Inactive Season change the result of a match?

No. It does not alter who wins a match or how holes are scored. It concerns whether a round can be submitted for handicap purposes, so any handicap use in a competition should follow the applicable WHS and competition requirements.

Does every golf area have an Inactive Season?

No. Some jurisdictions have year-round Active Season arrangements, while others declare seasonal dates. Confirm the schedule with the Authorized Association for the course being played.

Is an Inactive Season the same as a golfer taking a break?

No. It is a jurisdictional period for handicap score submission, not a player’s personal decision to stop playing. A golfer may play socially during that period, but the score cannot be submitted for handicap purposes under the definition.

Are these dates universal?

No. Dates vary by jurisdiction and can be year-round or seasonal. Do not copy dates from another state, country or club without checking the governing association that administers handicapping where the round occurred.
