What is Knockout in golf? A Knockout is a competition structure in which a player or side advances by winning a head-to-head match, while the loser leaves the main draw. In an illustrative eight-player Knockout, Alex beats Ben 3 and 2 in the quarter-final, Chris beats Dana 1 up, and the winners meet in the semi-final; the bracket continues until one finalist wins the championship.

Meaning

A Knockout is a competition structure in which a player or side advances by winning a head-to-head match, while the loser leaves the main draw. Successive rounds reduce the field until one finalist wins the championship. The draw, seeding, byes and match deadlines are set by the Committee.

How it matters in match play

Knockout competitions normally use Match Play: each pairing is settled by holes won, lost or tied, and a match ends when one player leads by more holes than remain, or when another Rules-approved result decides it. A Committee publishes the draw and Terms of the Competition, which should explain pairings, any Seed positions or Bye places, deadlines and how a tied match is extended. Knockout describes the tournament pathway, not a separate scoring method.

Common questions

Is Knockout a type of Match Play?

Usually, Knockout is the competition structure and Match Play is the scoring format used within each pairing. A Committee could design a different elimination event, so the Terms of the Competition should identify the form of play.

What happens to the loser of a Knockout match?

The loser normally leaves the main draw and cannot progress to the next round. A competition may publish a Consolation Bracket or another secondary arrangement, but that is an event choice rather than an automatic feature of Knockout.

What happens if a Knockout match is tied?

In Match Play, a tied match is normally extended one hole at a time until there is a winner, unless the Terms of the Competition provide a different permitted procedure. Check the event terms for the hole order and handicap-stroke treatment.

Does Knockout require eight or sixteen players?

No. A Committee can choose the field size and draw. If the field does not fill a bracket, the Terms may provide Bye places or another method of assigning first-round matches.

Is a Knockout the same as a Match-Play Bracket?

They are closely related but not identical terms. Knockout describes elimination across rounds, while a Match-Play Bracket is the published diagram or schedule showing the pairings and progression.

Is Knockout an official Rules of Golf format?

Knockout is not a separate form of play named in Rule 3.2. It is a competition arrangement, so the Committee must state the form of play and other conditions in the Terms of the Competition.
