Meaning
A leaderboard is a published display of competitors' current positions or results in a golf competition. It may show strokes, points, holes, or match results, depending on the event; it is a reporting tool rather than a scoring format or a Rule of Golf definition.
How it matters in match play
In match play, a leaderboard normally shows each pairing, the players or sides, the match status and the result or current lead, such as 2 up or 4 and 3. It should not rank a match by total strokes as though it were stroke play. Under Rule 3.2a(5), a match result becomes final when recorded on an official scoreboard or other place identified by the Committee, or reported as directed.

Worked example
In an illustrative club match, Alex is 2 up after 16 holes against Ben, so the leaderboard can show Alex 2 up with 2 to play; if Alex wins the 17th, it can update to 3 and 1 and record the match as Alex's win.

Common questions
Is a leaderboard part of the Rules of Golf?
No. Leaderboard is ordinary competition and publishing language, not a defined scoring format in the Rules of Golf. The Rules do, however, refer to recording a match result on an official scoreboard or another place identified by the Committee.
What does a match-play leaderboard show?
It commonly shows the pairing, holes completed or remaining, and the current match status, such as 1 up, all square or 4 and 3. The event's Terms of the Competition may determine the exact layout and update process.
Does a leaderboard decide who wins a match?
The playing result comes from the match under the applicable Rules and Terms of the Competition. For an official match, Rule 3.2a(5) addresses when the result becomes final after it is recorded or reported in the Committee's identified way; a casual display should not override that process.
Can a leaderboard be used for stroke play and match play?
Yes. In stroke play it may list total strokes or points and positions across the field; in match play it normally reports each head-to-head match by holes won, lost or tied and the match result. Those are different competition calculations.
Is a leaderboard the same as a scoreboard?
They overlap, but the terms are not always interchangeable. A scoreboard can be the official place where a match result is recorded, while leaderboard often means a broader display of standings or results. The organiser's terminology and Terms of the Competition control.
What does 4 and 3 mean when shown on a leaderboard?
It means the player or side won by four holes with only three holes left, so the match ended after the 15th hole of an 18-hole match. It is a match result, not a four-stroke margin.
