Meaning
A match-play bracket is the draw or diagram that organises a knockout competition. It shows first-round pairings and the later places that winners occupy, so each match winner can progress towards the final. The bracket is an event-management structure, not a separate scoring format.
How it matters in match play
The bracket connects individual matches into a knockout pathway. A committee may place players by random draw, qualifying score, handicap, or seeding, and may use byes when a flight is not full. Once the bracket is set, each match is still decided hole by hole under match-play rules; advancing is determined by the match result, not by total strokes across the whole field.

Common questions
Is a match-play bracket a golf format?
No. It is the competition layout used to organise a knockout field. The underlying format is Match Play, where opponents contest holes and a match winner advances.
How are players placed in a match-play bracket?
The committee may use a random draw, qualifying scores, handicap, or seeding. The Terms of the Competition should state how the draw is organised, particularly where there are multiple flights or draws.
What is a bye in a match-play bracket?
A Bye is a place in the draw where no first-round opponent is available, allowing a player or team to advance without playing that round. It is used to complete an undersubscribed flight, not to award a match result based on holes won.
Does the bracket decide who wins a match?
No. It determines the pathway and the next opponent. The match itself is decided under the agreed Terms of the Competition and the Rules of Golf, including the match-play result and any procedure for a tied match.
Can a match-play bracket include a qualifying round?
Yes. A stroke-play qualifying round can determine who enters a flight and how players are placed. The later knockout matches then use the published draw; the qualifying score does not replace hole-by-hole match scoring.
Is a bracket the same as a Match Result?
No. A bracket is the overall draw structure. A Match Result is the outcome of one pairing, such as Alex beating Ben 2 up, which is then used to fill the next bracket position.
