Meaning
A Match-Play Qualifier selects entrants for a match-play draw, commonly through one or more stroke-play rounds with the lowest scores qualifying. The competition terms specify the qualifying format, number of places and tie procedure.
How it matters in match play
The qualifier is not itself the head-to-head match stage. Once the field is selected, the Committee publishes the draw and the qualifiers begin individual or team matches under the event's terms. Seeding, byes and tie procedures can vary, so a qualifier's position in the draw does not by itself establish a Rule of Golf requirement.

Worked example
Illustrative only: a club accepts 32 entries, runs one round of Stroke Play and sends the lowest 16 scores into a knockout Match Play draw; if Alex scores 74 and finishes 12th, Alex qualifies, while Ben's 79 in 19th misses the match-play field.

Common questions
Is a match-play qualifier the same as Match Play?
No. The qualifier is the selection stage, often decided by Stroke Play; Match Play is the later head-to-head stage where players compare holes won, lost or tied.
How are players selected for a match-play qualifier?
The Terms of the Competition decide the qualifying format and how many advance. A common arrangement is to rank competitors by Stroke Play scores and take a stated number into the Match-Play Bracket.
What happens when players tie for the last qualifying place?
The Committee must apply the tie method stated in the Terms of the Competition. It may use a Play-off or another announced procedure; there is no single universal tie method for every qualifier.
Does qualifying score determine the match result?
No. The qualifying score normally determines entry and possibly seeding. Each later match is settled separately by holes won, lost or tied under the event terms and the Rules of Golf.
Can a qualifier use a handicap?
It can if the Terms of the Competition make it a Handicap Competition, but the allowance and calculation must be specified and applied correctly. Do not assume a handicap allowance from one format applies to every qualifier.
Is a match-play qualifier always Stroke Play?
No. Stroke Play is a common qualifying method, but the Committee can define another authorised format or competition structure in the Terms of the Competition. Check the event conditions rather than relying on the label alone.
