Meaning
Maximum Score is a form of stroke play in which the Committee caps a player's or side's score on each hole. The cap may be set relative to par, as a fixed number of strokes, or by reference to handicap, such as net double bogey.
How it matters in match play
Maximum Score is not a match-play format: it uses stroke-play scoring, so a capped hole score does not by itself create a Won Hole, Lost Hole or match result.

Common questions
Is Maximum Score the same as normal stroke play?
It is a form of stroke play, but the Committee sets a maximum score for each hole. Once the cap is reached, the player may stop and records the maximum rather than a higher actual score.
Who decides the Maximum Score cap?
The Committee sets it in the Terms of the Competition. The cap can be relative to par, a fixed number such as 8, or linked to handicap, such as net double bogey.
Is Maximum Score used to settle a match?
No. Maximum Score is governed as a stroke-play form under Rule 21.2, not as head-to-head match play. A club may create a separate house format, but its scoring terms should be agreed before play.
