Meaning
A Nine-Hole Score is the total number of strokes recorded over nine completed holes. It can be a gross or net result, depending on the format and whether Handicap Strokes are applied. The term describes the length of the round or score, not a separate Rules of Golf competition format.
How it matters in match play
A nine-hole match is settled by the holes won, lost or tied, rather than simply by adding the nine-hole stroke totals. A Nine-Hole Score can still be useful as the stroke record for each player, but the match result needs the hole-by-hole outcomes and any agreed handicap strokes. The Rules of Golf do not create a general nine-hole match-play format; the Committee or players must define the competition terms.

Worked example
Illustratively, Alex shoots 41 and Ben shoots 44 in a nine-hole stroke-play round, so Alex is three strokes lower; in a separate nine-hole match, Alex wins five holes, Ben wins three and one is halved, so Alex wins 2 up.

Common questions
Is a Nine-Hole Score the same as an 18-hole score?
No. It records only nine holes. Under the 2024 WHS treatment, an acceptable nine-hole score can be converted into an 18-hole Score Differential using the played nine-hole result and an expected Score Differential; it is not simply the nine-hole score doubled.
Can a Nine-Hole Score count for a Handicap Index?
It can, where the round meets the applicable WHS conditions and the local jurisdiction accepts the format. The R&A states that national associations set the minimum holes; the USGA’s current guidance requires all nine holes, with a current Course Rating and Slope Rating, for an acceptable nine-hole score.
Does the lower Nine-Hole Score win a match?
Not automatically. In match play, the player who wins more holes wins the match, even if their total strokes are higher. Record each hole’s result, apply any agreed Handicap Strokes correctly, and report the Match Result separately from the nine-hole stroke totals.
Is Nine-Hole Score an official match-play format?
No general official format is created by the term itself. It describes a nine-hole score or round. A Committee may run a nine-hole match or competition under stated Terms of the Competition, but local conditions and scoring arrangements should be made clear in advance.
