Meaning
An Open Division is a competition category intended to be available without a narrower age or handicap restriction, subject to the event's published entry terms. The label does not by itself decide whether scoring is gross or net, or whether the event is match play or stroke play.
How it matters in match play
In match play, an Open Division describes who is grouped in the competition, not how holes are won. The Committee's Terms of the Competition must state the form of play, eligibility, handicap conditions and tie arrangements. An open match-play division may be scratch or handicap, so check the event notice before applying strokes or settling a result.

Common questions
Does Open Division always mean scratch golf?
No. Some event terms use Open Division for gross or scratch scoring, but the name alone is not a universal rule. Read the competition conditions to see whether handicaps are used.
Can an Open Division be match play?
Yes. Open Division identifies the competition category. The event can specify Individual Match Play, another form of play, or qualifying followed by match play.
Is Open Division the same as an unrestricted field?
Not necessarily. A Committee may still set entry dates, handicap limits, age or gender conditions, tee requirements, or other terms. ‘Open’ should be read with the complete notice, not in isolation.
How should handicaps be handled in an Open Division match?
Use only the handicap method stated in the Terms of the Competition. If no handicap method is stated, ask the Committee rather than assuming that Open Division means either gross or net scoring.
Does the label decide who wins the competition?
No. The published format and scoring terms decide the result. In a match, the player who wins more holes wins the match, while the division label describes the field category.
Are Open Division and Championship Flight interchangeable?
No. They can overlap in some event notices, but each is a local competition label. Use the organiser's stated eligibility, scoring and prize conditions to interpret the category.
