Meaning
An Overall Bet is a casual wager on the combined result for the full round, usually all 18 holes. In a Nassau, it is the third bet alongside separate Front-Nine Bet and Back-Nine Bet wagers. The group must agree whether it is settled on gross or net scores.
How it matters in match play
An Overall Bet is not a separate Rules of Golf competition format. It can sit alongside a Match Play wager and settle when the agreed 18-hole result is known, even if the hole-by-hole match has already finished. Agree in advance whether the bet follows holes won or total gross or net strokes; those are different measures under Rule 3.1a.

Worked example
Illustrative example: Alex and Ben agree on a $5 Overall Bet using net 18-hole scores. Alex totals 86 gross and receives 10 strokes, making 76 net; Ben scores 82 gross with 4 strokes, making 78 net, so Alex wins the $5 bet under that house rule.

Common questions
Is an Overall Bet the same as a Nassau?
Not by itself. A Nassau normally contains three agreed bets: Front-Nine Bet, Back-Nine Bet and Overall Bet. A group can also play only an Overall Bet, with its own settlement and handicap terms.
Is an Overall Bet based on holes or total strokes?
There is no universal answer for this casual bet. Decide before teeing off whether the wager follows the Match Play result or the lowest total gross or net score for the round. Record that choice clearly on the Scorecard or match sheet.
How do handicaps work for an Overall Bet?
Use the handicap procedure stated for the underlying competition, not an invented Overall Bet allowance. For individual Match Play, WHS Appendix C recommends a 100% allowance, with the lowest Playing Handicap set to zero relative to the others; a casual group should still agree whether its Overall Bet uses net scores and how strokes are allocated.
Can the Overall Bet continue after a Match Play result is decided?
Yes, if the group agreed that the bet is based on the full-round total rather than holes won. The Rules of Golf decide the official match result, while the casual wager's settlement depends on its announced house rule.
Does the Rules of Golf define an Overall Bet?
No. The term describes a casual side wager, not a Rules of Golf competition format. The Rules distinguish Match Play, based on holes won, lost or tied, from stroke play, based on total strokes; they do not prescribe the stake or settlement of a side bet.
What should players agree before starting?
Agree the stake, whether the Overall Bet uses gross or net scores, the handicap allowance and stroke allocation if relevant, how ties are settled, and whether a conceded or unfinished hole counts. Written terms avoid changing the bet after the result is known.
