What is Pairing in golf? A pairing is the planned grouping of golfers to play together, or the selection of two opponents for a match. For an illustrative knockout draw, Alex is paired with Ben and Chris with Dana; if Alex beats Ben, the next-round pairing is determined by the published Match-Play Bracket rather than by their hole scores alone.

Meaning

A pairing is the planned grouping of golfers to play together, or the selection of two opponents for a match. It can describe a starting group, a match-play draw or a later-round assignment; it is an arrangement for a competition, not a scoring system or a separate format.

How it matters in match play

In match play, a pairing identifies the two players or sides who face each other in a match. In a knockout event, the Committee’s draw establishes first-round opponents and the match order, while later pairings follow the bracket. Rule 5.4a requires a player and opponent to play each hole in the same group. The Terms of Competition may set how the draw is made.

Common questions

Is a pairing a golf format?

No. Pairing describes who is grouped with whom or who plays whom. The underlying competition may be Match Play, Stroke Play or another format.

What does pairing mean in match play?

It normally means the opponent pairing in the draw, such as Alex versus Ben. The pairing identifies the match; it does not decide the winner or the handicap strokes.

Who decides match-play pairings?

The Committee normally publishes the draw under the Terms of the Competition. The draw can use a random process, Qualifying scores, Handicap, or Seed arrangements, depending on the event rules.

Can players choose their own pairing?

Only if the Committee permits it. The R&A Committee Procedures say a Committee can set starting times and groups or allow players to set their own, so the event’s terms control.

Does a pairing determine a Tee Time?

Not automatically. A pairing may identify opponents, while a separate schedule assigns the Tee Time. In some competitions the draw and starting times are published together.

Is a pairing the same as a group?

Not always. A pairing can mean two opposing players or sides in Match Play; a group can contain more players in a Stroke Play starting group. Event terminology and the published Start List should be checked.
