What is Prize Division in golf? A prize division is a separately listed category in a golf competition, such as gross, net, age or gender, with its own eligibility, scoring basis or prizes. In an illustrative club event, Alex wins the $60 Gross Prize Division with 74 gross strokes, while Ben wins the $60 Net Prize Division with 68 net strokes; those are separate awards under the published Terms of the Competition, not a historical result.

Meaning

A prize division is a separately listed category in a golf competition, such as gross, net, age or gender, with its own eligibility, scoring basis or prizes. The committee defines the division and its conditions in the Terms of the Competition.

How it matters in match play

A match-play event may place players in divisions or flights, then award a prize to the winner of each division. A division is not a special match-play scoring rule: the Terms of the Competition must state the draw, eligibility, handicap method and prize. Under Rule 3 guidance, using handicaps to split a field can make a division a handicap competition.

Common questions

Is a prize division the same as a flight?

Not always. A flight is commonly a subdivision of a field, while a prize division can describe any separately awarded category. A competition's Terms of the Competition decide how the labels are used.

Can one player win both a gross and a net prize division?

That depends on the published Terms of the Competition and the applicable amateur-status rules. The USGA and R&A guidance treats gross and net competitions as separate divisions in some circumstances, but prize eligibility and limits still need checking.

Does a prize division change match-play scoring?

No. It identifies who competes for a particular award. Match-play holes are still settled under the selected format and handicap terms; the committee must publish how players qualify for and win the division.

Is Prize Division an official Rules of Golf term?

It is ordinary competition language rather than a standalone scoring rule in the Rules of Golf. Its meaning comes from the event's Terms of the Competition, with Rule 3 guidance relevant when prizes or handicaps are involved.

Are gross and net prize divisions universal?

No. Clubs and organisers may offer different divisions, and their eligibility, scoring and prize conditions vary. Read the event terms rather than assuming that every competition offers both gross and net awards.

Can handicaps be used to create prize divisions?

Yes, an organiser may divide a field by handicap, but the effect is not merely cosmetic under Rule 3 guidance: a handicap-based division may be treated as a handicap competition for amateur-status prize purposes.
