Meaning
A Round Score is the total number of strokes recorded for a completed round, including penalty strokes. It may be reported as a Gross Score before handicap adjustment or a Net Score after handicap strokes are applied. The total is normally built from the individual Hole Scores on the Scorecard.
How it matters in match play
Round Score is usually secondary in match play because the match is decided hole by hole: the player with fewer strokes, after applicable handicap strokes, wins that hole. Players can therefore win the match without having the lower total Round Score. Keep the hole results and Match Score accurate; a total is useful for review or a separate competition, not for deciding the match under the Rules.

Common questions
Is a Round Score the same as a Gross Score?
Not always. A Gross Score is the total strokes before handicap strokes are applied. Round Score is a broader descriptive term that can refer to either that gross total or the resulting Net Score, so check the competition's wording.
Does the lower Round Score win a match?
No. In match play, each hole is won, lost or tied, and the match goes to the player who leads by more holes than remain. The lower total Round Score does not override those hole results.
Can a Round Score be used for handicap purposes?
It can contribute to a handicap record only when the round meets the applicable Rules of Handicapping conditions, including an authorised format, the minimum holes and Rules of Golf requirements. Local national-authority choices can affect what is acceptable.
How do I calculate a Round Score?
Add the strokes recorded for each hole, including any applicable penalty strokes. For a Net Score, apply the handicap strokes according to the competition or handicap rules after the hole scores have been recorded.
Is Round Score an official format of play?
No. It is a plain scoring description, not a separate format. The competition may be stroke play, match play or another authorised format, each with its own method for deciding results.
Does an unfinished round have a Round Score?
You may have a partial total, but whether it can be used for a competition or handicap record depends on the format, the number of holes played and the applicable Terms of the Competition or Rules of Handicapping.
