What is Stroke in golf? A stroke is the forward movement of the club made to strike the ball. On a par-4 hole, Alex takes 4 strokes and Ben takes 5, with no penalties, so Alex wins the hole by one stroke; if Alex had one penalty stroke included, the counted total would still be 4 only if three club strikes plus that penalty made 4.

Meaning

A stroke is the forward movement of the club made to strike the ball. Under the Rules, an intentional swing that misses the ball can still be a stroke; a deliberately stopped or deliberately missed downswing is not, and an accidental hit during a practice swing is not.

How it matters in match play

In match play, strokes are counted on each hole, including penalty strokes, and the player with fewer strokes wins that hole. In a handicap match, handicap strokes adjust the hole scores to net scores, so the lower net score wins. A stroke is therefore the basic playing action counted to decide a hole, not the match result itself.

Common questions

Does a practice swing count as a stroke?

Not when the ball is accidentally struck during a practice swing or while preparing to make a stroke. The Rules also say a stroke has not been made when a player deliberately stops the downswing or deliberately misses the ball.

How does a stroke affect a match-play hole?

The player who completes the hole in fewer strokes, including penalty strokes, wins it. In a handicap match, compare the resulting net scores after the applicable handicap strokes are given by hole.

Is a stroke the same as a hole score?

No. A stroke is one forward club movement made to strike the ball. A hole score is the total strokes and applicable penalty strokes recorded for completing that hole.

Does an accidental double hit count as two strokes?

No. If the club accidentally hits the ball more than once while making a stroke, the Rules treat it as one stroke and apply no penalty for the accidental multiple contact.

Does Stroke mean Stroke Play?

No. Stroke is the individual club movement defined by the Rules. Stroke Play is a form of competition in which scores for the round or rounds are compared against the field by total strokes.

Can a penalty stroke decide a match-play hole?

Yes. Match-play hole results use strokes made and penalty strokes. A player can lose a hole because the opponent has the lower total, even when the difference includes a penalty stroke.
