Best first choice

Four-ball stroke play. Five pairs let all ten golfers play in one field while retaining an individual ball and a clear best-score-per-hole team result. It is easier to organise than a multi-round match schedule, and the WHS table gives four-ball stroke play a recommended 85% allowance when handicap competition terms use that recommendation.

What to agree before play

Do not call five pairs a single ten-player four-ball side: four-ball is built from two-player sides, so publish the pairings and whether scores are compared in a field or in matches. Do not assume a scramble has one universal set of selection, placement or handicap rules; the Committee must state the local conditions and settlement method. Ten golfers should be split into sides and starting groups as the course requires; do not imply that ten players should play together as one group.

Table

Game or arrangementWhy it fits
Four-ball stroke play Split the ten golfers into five pairs, with each partner playing their own ball and the lower score on each hole counting for the side.
Four-ball match play Use five pairs in head-to-head pair matches, so the group gets a team contest without pretending all ten form one side.
Foursomes stroke play Make five pairs, with each pair playing one ball in alternating order; it rewards partnership and keeps the field to five sides.
Foursomes match play Run pair-versus-pair alternate-shot matches, using a draw or a scheduled team event; it is a genuine two-player-side format for ten golfers.
Two-team match-play programme Divide the group into two teams of five and publish the match count, points and pairings in advance; this is a practical team arrangement whose Committee terms set the scoring.
Two-player scramble Form five pairs that repeatedly choose the preferred shot and continue from that location; use the competition's written local rules and handicap method rather than treating scramble as a standard Rules of Golf form.

Worked example

Illustrative handicap example only: in a foursomes match, Alex and Ben have Course Handicaps of 8 and 14 (combined 22), while Chris and Dana have 12 and 20 (combined 32); the 10-stroke team difference multiplied by the WHS-recommended 50% foursomes allowance gives Chris and Dana 5 strokes, subject to the Committee's Terms of Competition and the WHS calculation basis.

Common questions

What is the simplest team format for 10 golfers?

Four-ball stroke play is usually the simplest practical choice: make five pairs, let each golfer play their own ball, and count the lower partner score for each hole. Confirm the scoring and any handicap allowance in the competition terms.

Can 10 golfers play a team match?

Yes. A practical arrangement is two teams of five, with the Committee deciding the match schedule, points and how the team total is calculated. The Rules of Golf Rule 24 describes team competitions, but it leaves those competition terms to the Committee.

What handicap allowance applies to 10-player team formats?

There is no single allowance for the group size alone. WHS Appendix C recommends 85% for four-ball stroke play, 90% for four-ball match play and 50% of combined team handicap for foursomes; a two-player scramble uses 35% of the lower handicap plus 15% of the higher handicap in the USGA table. The Committee should state the applicable allowance and calculation in advance.

Is foursomes the same as four-ball?

No. In foursomes, partners share one ball and alternate strokes. In four-ball, each partner plays a separate ball and the side uses the lower score for the hole.

Can all 10 golfers play one scramble together?

That would be a house arrangement, not the two-player scramble recommendation used here. For a manageable competition, make five two-player teams and publish the selection, placement and scoring conditions before play.

Are these examples historical results?

No. Alex, Ben, Chris and Dana are house names and the numbers are an illustrative calculation for explaining the method, not historical player or event data.
