Best first choice

Four-player scramble. With 12 golfers, it creates three equal teams of four and gives every player a shot at contributing on every hole. It is a practical large-group arrangement, but the Committee must publish the team handicap, any minimum-drive condition and the order of play before starting.

What to agree before play

Twelve golfers should be split into teams and separate tee times or groups; they should not be treated as one 12-player playing group Scramble, Texas scramble and Ambrose are not interchangeable rule names: write the exact selection, minimum-contribution and handicap conditions into the Terms of the Competition Do not apply a remembered allowance automatically; WHS Appendix C gives recommended percentages for specified formats, while the Committee sets the allowance in the competition terms

Table

Game or arrangementWhy it fits
Four-ball stroke play Pair the 12 golfers into six sides and score the better net ball, with three foursomes or tee-time groups keeping the field moving
Foursomes Pair the golfers into six sides for alternate-shot rounds, useful when the group wants a strategic partner format rather than six individual balls per tee time
Greensomes Use six pairs where both partners tee off, then each side selects one tee shot and continues alternate shot
Four-player scramble Make three teams of four, selecting one shot at each stage so every player contributes to a shared team score
Texas scramble Run three teams of four with a written minimum-drive or other event condition, agreed before play
Best 2 of 4 stroke play Make three teams of four and count the two selected team scores on each hole, provided the Committee publishes the selection and handicap terms

Worked example

For one four-player scramble team with Course Handicaps 8, 12, 20 and 28, the published 25%/20%/15%/10% recommendation gives 2.00 + 2.40 + 3.00 + 2.80 = 10.20 strokes before the final rounding specified by the Committee; if the team grosses 78, a 10-stroke Playing Handicap would produce a net 68. The other two teams need their own four Course Handicaps calculated in the same way.

Common questions

How should 12 golfers be split for team formats?

The cleanest split is three teams of four for a four-player scramble or a four-person best-of-four arrangement. For partner formats such as four-ball, foursomes or greensomes, make six pairs and allocate them across separate tee times or playing groups.

Is a four-player scramble allowance automatically 25 percent?

No. WHS Appendix C lists 25%, 20%, 15% and 10% from the lowest to highest handicap as a recommended four-player scramble allowance. The Committee should state the allowance and calculation method in the Terms of the Competition.

Can all 12 players play as one team?

That is not the ordinary two-, three- or four-person scramble described in the R&A guidance. Use three teams of four, or another clearly written event arrangement, and do not present a house arrangement as a separate Rules-defined format.

Which format is easiest for mixed abilities?

A four-player scramble is usually the most forgiving editorial choice because the team selects one ball at each stage. That is a practical recommendation, not a measured pace or an official handicap ruling; agree the team allowance and selection rules first.

Can 12 golfers play a four-ball event?

Yes, as six two-player sides arranged across tee times or groups. Under Rule 23, each partner plays a separate ball and the side's hole score is the lower partner score; a 12-player field is not one 12-player four-ball side.

Are Ambrose and Texas scramble official WHS allowance categories?

The R&A describes scramble and several variations, including Texas scramble, while WHS Appendix C lists specific scramble sizes and percentages. Treat Ambrose or a customised Texas scramble as an event arrangement unless the Committee has written and approved its full conditions.
