Meaning
Score Verification is a deliberate check that hole scores, penalties, concessions and the resulting match or round result agree with what happened before the result is reported or a score is submitted. It is a practical checking step, not a separately defined competition format.
How it matters in match play
In match play, verify each hole result and the running score with the opponent before starting the next hole. Rule 3.2d requires the right number of strokes to be given when asked, and a wrong match score can become the actual score if it is not corrected in time. The Rules do not create a generic named post-round Score Verification procedure, so clubs may set their own recording process.

Common questions
Is Score Verification an official format of golf?
No. It is a plain-English name for checking that the recorded scores and result are accurate. The Rules of Golf prescribe particular responsibilities and correction deadlines, but do not define Score Verification as a format.
When should players verify a match score?
Check the hole result as each hole ends and confirm the running score before play begins on the next hole. If a player gives the wrong number of strokes, Rule 3.2d sets when it can be corrected; after the relevant deadline, the wrong match score becomes the actual score.
Does score verification apply to handicap submissions?
Yes as a sensible check, but the formal requirements come from the Rules of Handicapping. A submitted score must be acceptable, recorded in chronological order and certified under the National Association's procedures. Hole-by-hole scores are strongly recommended by Rule 4.1.
Is match-play verification the same as signing a stroke-play scorecard?
No. In regular stroke play, Rule 3.3b places specific duties on the marker and player to check, certify and return the scorecard. Match play is decided hole by hole, with information and correction deadlines under Rule 3.2d; any club recording sheet remains subject to the Terms of the Competition.
Can a club use its own Score Verification process?
Yes, provided it does not conflict with the Rules of Golf or the Terms of the Competition. A club might require both players to initial a match sheet or report the result to a scorer. That is an administrative house process, not a universal Rule of Golf requirement.
What should be checked before reporting a result?
Confirm each hole's winner or halved status, any concessions or penalties, the running match score, and the final result. For handicap purposes, also check the date, course and tee information and the score format required by the applicable certification process.
