What is Scoreboard in golf? In golf, a scoreboard is a display or record that shows a competition’s current or final results. Illustrative example only: after Alex wins three holes and Ben wins one, the scoreboard can read Alex 2 up; if Alex wins hole 16 of an 18-hole match, it reads Alex 3 and 2, because two holes remain.

Meaning

In golf, a scoreboard is a display or record that shows a competition’s current or final results. Depending on the format, it may show hole scores, total strokes, points, or a match position such as ‘2 up’.

How it matters in match play

In match play, the useful scoreboard figure is the match state, not simply the players’ accumulated strokes. After each hole, a scorer can show the hole scores and whether a player or side is up, down, or all square; the final display records the result. The Rules recognise an official scoreboard or other identified place for recording the result.

Common questions

What does a golf scoreboard show?

It shows the information needed for that competition, such as hole scores, total strokes, points, or a match-play position. The organiser’s competition format determines the labels and display method.

How is a match-play score shown on a scoreboard?

It is normally shown as holes up or down, or All Square when neither side leads. A final result can also include the number of holes remaining, such as 3 and 2.

Is a scoreboard the same as a scorecard?

No. A scorecard is the playing record used for scores, while a scoreboard is a public or shared display of competition information. In match play, the Rules do not require players to keep a scorecard, although an organiser may still use one.

Does the Rules of Golf prescribe a scoreboard design?

No. Rule 3.2a(5) refers to recording the match result on an official scoreboard or another identified place, but it does not prescribe a particular layout or technology.

Can a scoreboard show strokes as well as the match position?

Yes. A scorer may show hole-by-hole stroke figures alongside the match position. In match play, however, the result is decided by holes won, lost or tied rather than by the lowest total stroke count.

Who updates a match-play scoreboard?

That is an event procedure, not a universal Rules requirement. A referee, walking scorer, scoring official or another person appointed by the Committee may update it, subject to the competition’s arrangements.
